The Story of Seth A. Bailey
In November 1995, seventeen-year-old Seth Bailey was passionate about sports. A junior at Iowa Mennonite High School, he was surprised when a sore leg turned into something serious. A diagnose of soft-tissue synovial sarcoma cancer came as a shock to all who knew Seth. His family and friends rallied around him while he learned that his best chance to defeat cancer was through an amputation of his right leg. Seth showed courage during and beyond cancer and returned to the sports he loved by playing high school varsity basketball with his prosthesis. Just 5 years after cancer first appeared in his life, it returned to his lungs and chest. Seth endured a year of chemotherapy and radiation and although cancer was a part of Seth's life, it didn't define his life. His courage and determination led him to become an intern for the U.S. Olympic Committee in 2002. He continued as an athlete and trained as a swimmer in the Paralympics. His battle was not yet done. In November 2002 more cancerous tumors were found in and around his lungs. Seth died in October 2003 after a heroic fight to live. All who knew him remember his courage.
The vision: A well-supported bike ride through the rolling hills of Amish country during the fall harvest. This Courage Ride will have routes of 100, 75, 55, 28 and 18 miles. We will be riding to honor the courage of all those who have battled cancer. Rest stops promise to be unique and fun offering delicious food.
A new event called "Wheels" will feature a one-mile ride in the city of Hills for wheels of all sorts … strollers, wheelchairs, roller blades, tricycles and more are invited to participate. And of course, we are starting our day off with a Dad's Belgian Waffle Breakfast. The Hills are alive with the sound of music! Music, music and more music will be played during the day from a stage set up at Hills City Park. There will be booths, displays and food for purchase. Family friendly events are being planned. All participants and spectators will be encouraged to raise money for cancer research. Those reaching specific funding levels will have their name entered into a drawing for prizes including tickets to the Oprah Winfrey Show. Join our team! Cancer is one of the great equalizers. The promise of a child, the aspirations of a teenager, the love of a mom or dad, the ambitions of a farmer, or CEO, or politician, or professional athlete mean nothing to cancer cells. It touches people from all walks of life and, for many of us, it's touched someone we care about. Join us as we fight back. Our cycling community will embrace the cancer community to create an event that will give back long after we climb off our bikes.
Pick up your phone and call me at 319-626-6062, or drop me an e-mail me at colleen-chapleau@uiowa.edu if you have any questions. Committees are being formed now. We need more caring people to join us as we truly make a difference in this world. The best part? We get to make it in the spirit of camaraderie with fellow cyclists. We need you if you can contribute several hours or if you can contribute more.
Registration is now open and can be done at: https://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1414368

Our one-day ride is billed as a "doozie of
a day" and serves up fun with a purpose. Let's embrace the cancer
community to create a fundraising event that will give back long after
we climb off our bikes.
Fundraising is encouraged and makes your name eligible to be drawn for prizes including 4 tickets to the Oprah Winfrey show. The route climbs up and down gentle, rolling hills in Amish country during the autumn harvest. The atmosphere will be brimming with life as we honor the courage and active life style of Seth A. Bailey. Seth loved sports! He participated in high school basketball, college intramurals and was training to one-day swim in the Paralympics while serving as an intern for the U.S. Olympic Committee, all after losing his leg to sarcoma cancer. The ride route includes several distances. In addition to a full century, shorter routes of approximately 75, 55, 28 and 15 miles are available. Bring your bicycle, recumbent, or tandem and enjoy low-traffic roads. And, introducing, “Wheels”, a 1 mile ride expressly created for those on wheels of any sort: wheelchairs, children’s bikes, strollers, roller blades and more. The cycling community will embrace the cancer community as we enjoy a day that will benefit cancer research and make us all a part of the team that will defeat cancer. Celebrate with unsurpassed camaraderie! We kick off the day with a Belgian waffle breakfast in Hills, Iowa. Breakfast will be served from 6 AM until 11 AM in the Community Building located on Main Street in Hills. Breakfast is open to the public with tickets on sale for $7. Children under 2 years of age are free. After your ride enjoy a hot shower and stay for live music in the park. There will be special events taking place in Hills all day long. Stay turned for more details! Grass camping is available in Hills City Park on Friday and Saturday. Camp with us on Saturday night and join the Bicyclists of Iowa City for their club ride on Sunday morning. The Amish Harvest Tour to Cure Cancer will quickly become your favorite one-day ride of the year! |
