Every Tuesday morning, the group will gather at the desinated point and begin the ride at 9 am, weather permitting. Rides vary in length from 30-50 miles; the pace is 12-14 mph overall average. We usually make a refreshment stop mid-ride & other short stops along the way so that we can stay together, enjoy the views, & smell the posies. Scheduled from May until September, rides may extend into October based on weather conditions and general interest.

22 miles NEW ROUTE! Meet at West High School in the west parking lot. We will do a loop out IWV road, drop south on Cosgrove Road and return on Rohret Road. We will get back to West High School using a small portion of bike trail through the residential area behind West High. After the ride, we can eat at a diner of your choice in Iowa City. We will do the Oxford-Tiffin loop, stopping at The Depot in Oxford to regroup. We will return to Herky St. and proceed to a diner of your choice in North Liberty. Bike to Work Week
This ride begins at the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp in Iowa City and ends at the New Pioneer Co-op in Coralville.  We ride as one large group through town past the dog park, and through Coralville.  Food is served at the Co-op at the end of the ride.  This is a point to point ride, so remember to make proper arrangements to travel safely home after the ride to the Co-op in Coralville.

Thursday Evening Leisure Rides - Hosted by Barb Goff, 351-8609

Description: If you're a beginner or a casual recreational rider, then join us every Thursday evening for a leisure ride around the Iowa City Metropolitan Area via the trails and low traffic roads. We stay together as a group and typically stop for refreshments after the ride (ice cream!). A great group of friendly riders who will look after you! Scheduled from May through August, rides may extend into October based on weather conditions and general interest.

General Information

  • Helmets are required on all rides.
  • If you are below the age of 18, you must have a your parent or guardian bring in a signed waiver in order to be allowed to participate.
  • Have a ride suggestion or are interested in being a ride leader? Send your recommendations to bicyclistsofiowacity@gmail.com.

Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes before the ride departure time, so that we may start riding on time. While many leaders choose often to wait an extra five to ten minutes past the scheduled start time, there is no guarantee this will happen. If you show up late, you will be responsible for your own well-being. Ride cancellations will be posted on the main page of this website at least 24 hours before the start of the ride. You are more than welcome however

As with all rides, some aspects may change depending on the leader's tastes. If you have doubts, please contact the leader. Cancellations & Weather Conditions

Sometimes a ride host may not be able to lead a ride due to last-minute circumstances. If the weather looks uncertain, you should check our Facebook page to see if a ride has been cancelled. If there is no updated status, then please contact the ride host. Rides may be cancelled up to 12 hours before ride start time. If they are cancelled, it's important to note that the ride host may still have it at his or her discretion, but BIC is no longer responsible for it. Usually, ride cancellations follow the same criteria:

  • Rain or Snow falling
  • Heavy fog
  • High Winds
  • Lightning & Thunderstorms (Severe Weather Warnings)
  • Temperatures below 32°F/above 100°F (Heat indexes above 100°F, Wind Chill below 32°F)
  • Air Stagnation Warning
Heat Index* / Hot Weather Caution
0–90°F Caution — fatigue is possible with prolonged exposure and activity
90–105°F Extreme caution — sunstroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion are possible
105–130°F Danger — sunstroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion are likely; heat stroke is possible

Note that exposure to full sun can increase heat index values by up to 15 °F (8 °C).
