General InformationBicyclists of Iowa City (BIC) was founded in 1976. The first planned rides were held only during the traditional riding season, but with steady growth in club membership, planned rides are now year round. BIC is recognized and respected as an active advocate for bicycling in Johnson County.
BIC is a member of the League of American Bicyclists and Adventure Cycling. LAB is a national bicycling organization founded in 1880 whose major concerns are protecting the rights and promoting the interests of bicyclists. Adventure Cycling was founded in 1974 as a national bike travel association, and now has developed and mapped a nation wide network of bicycling touring routes and has produced a variety of publications and services for bicyclists.
General meeting time and location will vary! Please check your printed newsletter or check elsewhere on this site for breaking news. There are no general meetings November and December due to the holidays, but special events may be planned these months--stay tuned!
General meeting activities include a short business meeting discussing current club activities; bicycling concerns; and a varied entertainment program by lecturers or members.
Officer's meetings are held once a month in a officer's home, usually beginning at 6:30pm. Dates of both meetings are listed on this web site and in the BICycle Post mailed to members. Check with BIC President for times and locations. These executive meetings address the present, future and ongoing club activities, updates from each officer, as well as cycling issues on the local, state, and national level. ALL meetings are open to members.
Saturday and Sunday rides are planned year round (weather permitting) ranging in distance from 20 to 100 miles. During late spring and summer, weekly "leisure rides" are scheduled in distances of 5-20 miles. These rides are perfect for the beginning or newer rider who wants to increase his or her cycling skills. All these rides are "group rides" --all riders stay together as a group. All club rides include a map of the route and have a ride coordinator. Rides are rated to indicate the ride coordinator's responsibility to the other riders. Helmets are required on all BIC rides.
The year begins with the annual "Hot Chocolate Ride" held in late January. This ride is around 10-15 miles as cyclists stop at 3-4 homes of BIC members to warm up and fuel up.
Independence Day brings the annual Amana Breakfast Ride, a 58 mile ride through the rolling countryside rewarded with an all-you-can-eat breakfast in Main Amana.
The last full week in July is the annual RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa). BIC provides RAGBRAI wristbands, transportation to and from the start and end points, and hauls baggage for members.
In early September, BIC hosts the annual Amish Century ride. This ride is fully supported with rest stops and sag wagon, as well as a full buffet style meal at the end.
The year finishes up with the holiday party. Held in early December, BIC members gather to eat a holiday meal and celebrate the season.

Bicyclists of Iowa City expects its members to ride responsibly and predictably, and depends on members to support the club's mission, policies and activities. Members of the Executive Board/Executive Committee are charged with the general operations of the club. They volunteer their time, talents, and energy to keep BIC an important part of bicycling for you, and for the community.
The Executive Board/Committee decides at each Executive meeting when and where the next Executive Meeting will meet. General Club Meetings are held approximately every other month at a time and location decided by the Co-Vice Presidents who are in charge of planning these meetings. Keep posted through this website for most current dates, times, and topics. Dates are also posted in the printed BICycle Post newsletter.
Check your newsletter (copies should be at Iowa City bicycle shops, OR check the Iowa City Public Library Periodicals Room Newsletter Rack for a browsing copy). Members are ALWAYS WELCOME at the Board Meetings, and your input is needed and requested.
